GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

Geotechnical Engineering Department offer a broad range of geo-engineering (soil investigations, materials investigations and pavement evaluation/design) consultancy services to Multidisciplinary Engineers, Architects, Consultants, Contractors, Local Authorities, Government Agencies, Developers, Utility companies and many others. The department has undertaken hundreds of projects throughout Tanzania.

Amongst our number are higher degree qualified registered Engineers, Consultants, Geologists, Technicians, Drillers and other support staff. The team can boast many years experience of highly varied site and ground conditions. We have undertaken a broad range of projects including: bridges; roads; railways; airports; educational buildings; commercial buildings; industrial developments; housing developments; sports facilities; and pipelines.

We boast of having three drill rigs (Dando, UK) capable of drilling and coring up to 90m and a number of testing equipment. We are on the verge of establishing a certified laboratory capable of performing a wide variety of tests including grain size analysis, plasticity index, permeability, swell/consolidation tests, standard and modified proctor tests just to name a few. Such tests are currently conducted often though our trusted subcontract laboratories.

Key consultancy services offered include soil investigations; materials investigations and pavement design. Site investigations involve investigations and analysis to define subsoil conditions and design parameters, recommendation of foundation types based on analysis of results in line with specific needs, and project management services to ensure manage contracts on behalf of our clients.

A typical ground investigation might include a desk study, drilling boreholes, SPTs, CPTs, trial pits, in-situ field testing, geotechnical laboratory testing and geophysical survey. We typically would provide recommendations for drilled piers, spread and continuous footings, post-tension slabs on grade, foundation drain systems, pavement and site construction.

We understand that Site Investigation is all about understanding and reducing risk. In so many cases, important decisions are made based on the information gained through a site investigation. You need to trust that this information will be reliable, accurate and on time.

Site Investigations activities undertaken by our team of experts include but not limited to the following:

Sounding (CPT) tests to determine subsoil profiles and bearing capacities
Test Pits for profiling and in-situ testing
Bulk and undisturbed sampling from boreholes
Rotary core drilling and sampling
Standard penetration test
Piezometer installation
U100 undisturbed sampling using Standard
Percussion drilling and rotary drilling
Plate load test to determine bearing capacity for shallow footings
Geophysical surveys in quarry sites
In – situ density test using sand replacement method
Ground water monitoring and sampling
Laboratory testing

Materials Investigations entails ascertaining the quality of earmarked construction materials for roads/highways/airport pavement as well as determination and analysis of in situ strengths of existing sub-soils and/or existing pavement layers. We have expertise enabling us to identify different soil/rock types, problem soils, use sound sampling techniques, recommend appropriate laboratory testing, and analysis of results enabling the most cost effective solution to any problem related to materials design and specifications.

Pavement Designs/Evaluations entails consultancy in the design, construction and maintenance of road, airfield and industrial pavements for a wide range of clients including; the Highways Agencies, Airports Authorities, Contractors, D&B and DBFO consortia, trade organizations, material suppliers, consultants and other local authorities.

Typically our consultation enables the client to alleviate delays and associated costs and to prepare the necessary budgeting for your project. Materials investigations and pavement designs are required in feasibility studies, preliminary designs, detailed engineering designs, quarry investigations, pavement evaluations for a number of roads, railways, airports and bridge projects.
